Reports | Serial website defacer DkD arrested in France {29th Jun 2003} |
|
|
Website Defacer DkD, now known to be a 17 year old teenager in France,
who famously compromised many hundreds of websites around the globe was
arrested earlier this week on a warrant issued by French authorities.
Notable defacements include UK government site
Defencebills.gov.uk [Rootsecure.net
report], Kevin Mitnick's company site
defensivethinking.com [Rootsecure.net
report], and many other US government / military sites.
The warrant (issued in response to the "Pas de Calais" website
defacement) was executed in the form of a dawn raid Tuesday morning at
6am local time by French police from the SRPJ, and
L'O.C.L.C.T.I.C. (Office Central de Lutte contre la Criminalité liée
aux Technologies de l'Information et de la Communication).
L'O.C.L.C.T.I.C. was created in May 2000 in order to fight emerging
computer crime.
Police seized a number of items from his residents including computer
equipment, cds and a diary/agenda. In a phone conversation with a
reporter from French online / in-print publication ‘Zataz', DkD said
police were sympathetic and polite, but made sure he understood that he
had done wrong.
While in custody, messages of support for DkD appeared on several
defaced *.mil websites stating "FREE DkD[||!! Hacktivism will never
die!" bearing some resemblance to what happened while Kevin Mitnick was
held in prison.
DkD was released after being held for only two days, under the condition he
reports back to a police station once a month, and does not use the
Internet for an as yet undetermined amount of time.
The arrest will likely send a chilling reminder of the consequences to
those involved with defacing websites, occasionally people are
indeed caught.
